Basler Memories

1940 bis 1949

The local group activity is completely suspended. The active sending and receiving amateurs were divided into groups with few exceptions by the troops, particularly the senders, the attentive (good, skilled?) listeners and the fliers. See the book by HB9T: "Fascination of the short waves" ( "Fascination der Kurzen Wellen"). At exception was HB9DU. He was active with the 1st Div.in Gstaad as a radio operator in the G1.5K (click here for photos of the equipment). One evening he was sent like lightning by the commander to Berne. There he met another 11 radio amateurs. Since at that time there were too few and inferior radio repair technicians in the army, we were intensively trained in the arsenal for 10 months as radio mechanics. The head instructor was R. Baumgartner HB9CV. Then we were put on call. Everything from walkie-talkies to high power radio stations from all over Switzerland were sent in.

On the morning of May 8th, 1945 the war in Europe ended. The next traffic exercise of the USKA could take place on June 24th. The confiscated devices were returned, however they could only be used provisionally and only with a special grant. From Basel only E. Iselin with the special call signal HB7FI was involved in the exercise.

Surprisingly on the 26th of Nov. the renewal of the transmission licenses and the release of all amateur bands occurred. (it was admitted much later that the PTT tried to use this opportunity to ban all of the amateurs, but the military authorities resisted energetic ally and won).

The 12th regular general assembly of the USKA took place on Jan. 3rd in the guard house in Basel. Chosen into the executive committee as president was Dr. E. Iselin HB9BJ and as a secretary, Dr. W. Frey HB9AC. 1947

The writing HB9DU was employed in 1947 at the general vocational school, around a new Abtmung "lab assistant" chemistry, physics, biology, dye works) being built. From an initial 40 apprentices and 3 teachers the number rose to 450 apprentices with 13 teachers. This brought so much work that HB9DU could no longer be active in the OG. It was as he were from 1951 to 1967 out of sight (lit. away from the window). in order to build a new Abtmung "Laboranten" for chemistry, physics, biology, Faerberei) on. Der Schreibende HB9DU wurde 1942 an der Allg.Gewerbeschule angestellt, um eine neue Abtmung "Laboranten" Chemie, Physik, Biologie, Färberei) auf zu bauen. Von anfänglich 40 Lehrlingen mit 3 Lehrern stieg die Zahl auf 450 Lehrlinge mit 13 Lehrern. Dies brachte soviel Arbeit, dass HB9DU kaum mehr in der OG tätig sein konnte. In der französisch-besetzten Zone Deutschlands (Süddeutschland) warim Gegensatz zu der amerikanischen und britischen Zone jegliche Amateurtatigkeit verboten. Trotzdem arbeiteten viele mit Da-und DL-rufzeichen schwarz. Es war jahrzehntealte Tradition, dass am sog. Hebeltag die Baselstädter ins nahe Wiesental fuhren, um das Andenken anden grossen alle mannischen Dichter zu feiern. Die Basler Behörden stellten die Anfrage an General König, ob Sie diese Tradition wieder aufnehmen dürften. Dieser bewilligte unter folgenden Bedingungen: es dürfen nur Gruppen über die grenze mit max. 1 Auto- es dürfen keine Waren aus der Zone nach Basel zuruck genommen werden-die Grenze ist von 0800 bis 2000 geöffnet.
Eine Anzahl Basler OMs beschlossen mit einer Süddeutscher Delegation unter Leitung von Wolfgang Körner DL1CU aus Stuttgart in Weil am Rhein eine Sitzung ab zuhalten, um Möglichkeiten zu finden, dass die deutschen Amateure in der Franz. Zone bald ihre Lizenz erhalten. Ausser Wolfgang waren noch 6 weitere wichtige süddeutsche Hams im Hause von DL6JN (Ludin) in Weil versammelt. Die Basler Gruppe umfasste 6 Hams, darunter HB9P mit Auto, die ubrigen mit Fahrrädern. Jeder hatte einen mit Esswaren vollgestopften Rucksack. Ess-und Rauchwaren,aber auch Nylonstrümpfe für die YL's. In Weil kochten die YL ein riesiges Mittagsmahl, das von den solche Genüsse lange entbehrenden DL-und DA-Amateuren genossen wurde. Als Dank machte OM Ludin den Führer und wir stiessen die Velos mit leeren Rucksäcken den Tüllinger Hügel hinauf. Dort oben in einer Waldlichtung stand eine Holzhütte mit Spiegelantenne. Sie enthielt eine Radarstation, die von den deutschen Soldaten beim Einmarsch der Franzosen verlassen wurde. Die Franzosen hatten kein Interesse daran, um so mehr wir Schweizer. In grösster Eile demontierten wir, was wir für unsere Basteltätigkeit brauchen konnten. Besonders die Mikrowellenröhren waren interessant. Eine Triode, die selbst erregt bei einer Steilheit von 16 mA/V eine Leistung von 90 Watt hergab. Dazu Messgeräte und neues Belzer-Werkzeug. Alles in die Rucksäcke und zuruck nach Weit. Einen Mikrowellenempfänger wollte C. Keel gerade mitnehmen. In aller Eile wurde er schwarz bemalt und neben dem Autoakku montiert, so dass die Franz.Zöllner dachten, es sei ein Reserveakku. Dann fuhren wir ohne Rucksäcke nach Basel. ---Am nächsten Mittwoch waren einige OMs in den Langen Erlen zu treffen. Da stand immer noch der Grenzzaun mit dem Stacheldraht obenauf. Ennet der Grenze kam der Franz.Laufposten vorbei:"Bonjour monsieur, ca va?" dann trabte er weiter. über das Feld kam ein Bauer mit Rucksack und Grabschaufel auf dem Rücken. Auch er grüsste den Posten freundlich und begann auf dem Feld zu graben. Als der Posten ausser Sichtweite war, schwang er den Rucksack ringsum und warf ihn mit grösster Kraft über den Grenzzaun in die Bäume auf Schweizboden. Dann kehrte der Bauer DL6JN wieder zurück. In der Zwischenzeit holten wir den Rucksack vom Baum. Dieses Spiel wiederhalte sich, bis alle Rucksäcke auf Basler Boden waren. Dank guter Polsterung waren Sämtliche Röhren usw.in tadellosem Zustand. Wären wir regulär über die Grenze, hätten die Franz.Zoll Beamten entdeckt, dass auf den Röhren stand: Wehrmacht eigentum und wir wären irgendwo im Gefängnis gelandet. Der waldgehende Schweizer Zöllner, der das Ganze mitbekam, hat sich nur den Bauch gehalten vor Lachen...
Einige Zeit später wurde den Baslern erlaubt, einmal pro Monat Angehörige ennet der Grenze zu besuchen. HB9DU besuchte "seinen Onkel" DL6JN in Weil. Während wir in der Stube sassen, wurde plötzlich die Türe aufgerissen und franz.Gendarmerie stürmte hinein. Mit vorgehaltener Pistole wurde befohlen: Sitzenbleiben. Dann nahmen die Polizisten Alles mit, das irgendwie nach Elektrisch aussah: Radio, Lautsprecher, Plattenspieler, Nähmaschine, Föhn, Küchenmaschine usw. Es wurde keinerlei Quittung ausgestellt. Den QRP-TX + RX fanden sie nicht. OM Ludin hatte sie unter den Holzbrettern der Kellertreppe festgeschraubt.
Zu Hause hat HB9DU eine Stinkwut auf die franz.Gendarmerie bekommen. Er ist hingesessen und hat einen dreiseitigen Artikel unter dem Titel "Ist Amateursein ein Verbrechen?" geschrieben, worin er als Schweizer Augenzeuge das blödsinnige Vorgehen schilderte. Der Artikel wurde in der "QRV" gedruckt und DL1CU reiste ins Hauptquartier zu General König damit und dieser las ihn. Resultat: vierzehn Tage später hatten sämtliche OMs im französisch besetzten Raum ihre Sendelizenz. (siehe QRV Nr. 8/1948 Seite 3). 1949
Am 8/9. Oktober wurde von Newcomern der OG ein übungsfieldday auf der Gempenfluh abgehalten. HB9P und HB9DU überwachten von Basel aus ihre QSO. Die Mitglieder: K.Hübner HB9KX (17)-E.Heritier HE9RDX(18)-H.P.Schaufelberger (ex-HB9IK mit Fähigkeits ausweis (22)- E.Koller HE9RPU(18)-P.Felber HE9RGZ (21) -P.KartaschOff HE9RAO (21). Weil eine kontaktierte Schweizerstation ein sehr schlechtes Tasterspiel hatte, gab die Gempenstation am Ende durch: QLF Güllerugger ar.Der Abhorch der PTT in Bern nahm dies auf und dessen neuernannter Chef Pittet kannte diesen Baselbieter Mundartausdruck nicht, erklärte, dass es sich hier um eine kommunistische übungsstation handeln müsse und bot die Basler Polizei auf. Gleichzeitig fuhren PTT Leute auf die Gempenfluh und stellten im dortigen Restaurant Empfänger und Tonbandgeräte auf. Nachts um 0100 traf die Basler Polizei auf Solothurnerboden ein und verhaftete sämtliche Jungamateure. Die Zelte wurden aufgerissen und die teuren Geräte standen im regen herum. Die "Verbrecher" wurden nach Basel in den Spiegelhof gefahren, in Einzelhaft gesteckt und einyeln verhört. Gleichzeitig gingen die PTT ßleute ins Privathaus von HB 9KX und nahmen dort alles Material, Logbücher usw. mit.
HB9P und HB9DU haben plötzlich nichts mehr von HB1KX gehört. HB9P telefonierte ins Gempenrestaurant und verlangte Jemanden von der Stationsmannschaft. "Diese sind nicht mehr hier, sie wurden alle verhaftet und nach Basel in den Spiegelhof transportiert". Carl telefonierte sofort dem obersten Chef des Pol.dep. Reg.rat Brechbühl und tobte, wieso die Basler Polizei auf Befehl eines subalternen Berner Beamten unschuldige Funkamateure auf Solothurnerboden verhaftete. HB9DU setzte sich an die Schreibmaschine und schrieb einen Bericht, der an sämtliche Zeitungen, sowie an den Chef der übermittlung in der Armee gesandt wurde. Der bekannte Journalist Hanns U. Christen beschrieb das Ereignis in der National-zeitung äusserst sarkastisch: "..wir hoffen von Herzen, dass die PTT den ausserordentlich Jungen Abhorchchef Pittet rasch weiter befördert. So weit, wie nur irgend möglich".
Auf eine entspr. Interpellation im Basler Grossen Rat entschuldigte sich Reg .rat Brechbühl für das unvernünftige Verhalten der Basler Polizei. (siehe Sonderbericht No.3)

1949
Die Basler OMs neckten HB9DU dauernd, dass er wohl ein guter Konstrukteur sei, aber sicher nie einen Kantest gewinnen känne. HB9DU erklärte, Konteste seinen ihm zuwider, aber er wolle es einmal versuchen. HB9P hatte aus Armee sich einen Hallicraftersender HT 4 (BC 610) besorgt. Also habe ich ein Wochenende den Fonieteil des World-Wide-DX-Contest des Magazins CQ mitgemacht. 24 Stunden lang alle paar Minuten ein Fonie-QSO. Resultat: First Place All Band Phone- HB Zone 14 with 53,584 points. "Und jetzt könnt ihr mir mit allen weiteren Contests..."
Im gleichen Jahr hat sich HB9DU aus Amerika einen Collins ART 13-sender gekauft. Der erste Sender ging mit dem Schiff in Le Havre in Flammen auf, doch der von der Versicherung bezahlte zweite Sender kam in Basel an. Es war der erste Sender mit vorwählbarer, motorischer Abstimmung. Diese Modelle wurden später in die Swissair-Verkehrsflugzeuge eingebaut.
Hans Stettler HB9 JS (Fabrikruf zeichen HB8 VX) erhielt von der Basler Polizei den Auftrag zu erkunden, ob es möglich sei, sämtliche Fahrzeuge mit Sprechfunk auszurüsten und auf dem Turm des "Affenkasten"(Höhere Töchterschule am Kohlenberg) eine Zentralstation zu errichten. HB9JS und HB9DU fuhren mit dem Auto nach Courcelles in Belgien. Dort verkauften die Amis ihr ganzes Lager an Armee-übermittlungsmaterial zu Schleuderpreisen, aber nur gegen Barzahlung. Wir kauften einige FM-UKW-Transceiver mit Kristallsteuerung, die dann der Polizei dienten, bis sie später von BBC-geräten abgelöst wurden. In Courcelles waren auch Offiziere der Swiss Army, um Handy-Talkies für 3885 kHz einzukaufen. Sie waren für $25.-- zu haben. Aber strikt nur Barzahlung. Die Herren reisten zurück nach Bern, brachten das Geld zusammen, kehrten zurück, um zu vernehmen, dass die yugoslawische Armee sämtliche Geräte gekauft hatte.
Später hat dann die Firma Autophon in Solothurn einen Nachbau von einigen Hundert gemacht, die dann allerdings Fr.600.- Pro Stück kosteten. Und noch viel später sollten diese als Surplus im Zeughaus Oensingen verschachert werden. Die Autophon erhob Einspruch, da sie um den Absatz ihrer neuesten Handfunkgeräte bangte. Die PTT verlangte dehalb vom Zeughaus Oensingen, dass die Geräte mit rotierenden Diamantsägen in vier Teite zerschnitten würden. Was dann auch geschah. (Eines konnte HB9DU retten. Es ist in seiner Sammlung histor. Funkgeräte)
Die Basler OMs erfuhren, dass in der Nähe von Stuttgart auch ein US-Armee-lager sei. Einige Amateure fuhren mit zwei VW-Bussen hin und füllten sie platschvoll mit all den Geräten, welche Schweizer Harns gerne hätten wie Kurzwellenempfänger BC 324, BC 348, Frequenzmesser BC 221, UKW und VHF-material in Hülle und Fülle. Dazu pelzgefütterte Offiziersjacken, zusammenlegbare Feldbetten und vieles mehr. Bezahlt wurde nach Gewicht: Totalgewicht minus Tara der leeren VW. Kurz vor dem Wägen drückte HB9DU den anwesenden, schwarzen Offizieren je eine uhr "Made in Switzerland" aus der EPA in die Hand. Am Schweizer Zoll stellten wir fest, dass die Amis sich zu unsern Gunsten kräftig "verwogen" hatten. Auf diese Art kam HB9DU zu seinem KW-RX, dem BC 348.
